SCGS ::AYG Torch Relay 2009::

SCGS commemorated the Asian Youth Games (AYG) with a torch relay to celebrate Singapore’s hosting of the inaugural 1st AYG 2009. The Torch Relay travelled to 45 schools that were under the AYG National Olympic Committees (NOC) Twinning Programme.

Each school was twinned with one of the Olympic Council of Asia’s Member NOC that would be taking part in the AYG. The theme was Igniting Sporting Passion in Asia's Youth. The relay aimed to gather support for the youth sporting heroes from all over Asia. The AYG was not only about promoting sports and sportsmanship, but also providing an opportunity for youths to learn about Asian history and culture. Together with Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) and Henry Park Primary School (HPPS), SCGS partnered with China in the twinning programme.

:::::: SCGS celebrates Olympism Week...

The Olympic Week was held in conjunction with International Friendship Day. Its theme was ‘PHILIA’ a Greek word that means friendship.

Professor C. Kunlan, an ex-Olympian shared his Olympic experience with the pupils. They were also introduced to the delicacies and games of various countries during Philia Jamboree.

Assistant Professor Canagasabai Kunalan, an ex-Olympian, was invited to our school to give a talk during Olympic Week.

At the Olympic Game, Mr Kunalan clocked in 10.38 seconds in the 100 m race. He held the record for 33 years until it was broken by UK Shyam by 0.01 seconds.

Mr Kunalan was not unhappy but happy for Shyam. To him, the Olympics is about sportsmanship and that you cannot always win.

His message for the youths of Singapore is: Train and compete but remember, the Olympics is about friendship and international relations.
