Philosophy

SCGS believes in using a holistic approach in the teaching of English Language and Literature. English Language competency is essential for communicating in the real world - it provides opportunities for personal development and promotes confidence in social interaction. Literature develops one’s sensitivity to how language can persuade and arouse emotions. Through Literature, girls will learn to appreciate the human condition and in the process, understand life in all its multifaceted dimensions.

Programme

We want to develop proficiency in both critical thinking and literacy. Hence, Language and Literature Studies are compulsory throughout a student’s sojourn in SCGS.

Through the study of a selection of literary texts such as novels, plays and poetry, as well as current affairs, girls are equipped with skills in creative writing and oratory. In the lower secondary, Language and Literature are fused together in the Language Arts Programme, where the expression of ideas is not just through print media but also through film and electronic media.. The approach to teaching and learning is multimodal. At the upper secondary, English Language and Literature are taught as separate subjects in preparation for the GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations. An SCGS girl will either offer Literature-in-English as a Pure Subject or as an Elective Subject (in combination with Social Studies).

Our programme aims to develop the girls’ abilities in communicating with others, and their appreciation of language, drama and the arts. We believe in the importance of providing opportunities for exposure to literary forms beyond the classroom, such as visits to the theatre, enrichment workshops and overseas excursions. As part of the accelerated curriculum in the SCGS Talent Programme, we offer Enhanced Language Studies to prepare pupils for communication with the global community. Programmes such as Media Studies, the Stanford Writing Programme, the Touchstone Mentoring Programme, school-based writing mentorship by local writers and Moot Parliament are conducted with the aim of empowering girls to think, write and speak confidently, and hence prepare them for meaningful roles in society.

 Literature
Literature develops her sensitivity to how language can persuade and arouse emotions. It also exposes the student to the human condition and in the process, she will understand life in all its multifaceted dimensions.

  Mother Tongue

Philosophy

At SCGS, we believe in helping every girl understand her historical and cultural identity. We want to help girls find their roots and master their Mother Tongue Language. In this age where the Mother Tongue Languages are those of the emerging economies, we aim to equip girls with skills in speaking and writing competently and confidently, and thus put them in good stead for future job opportunities and business collaboration.

Programme

We believe in teaching Mother Tongue in an all-rounded and engaging manner. Our teachers use a variety of resources, such as novels, poetry, drama, music and news media in their teaching of the language. Reading, listening, writing and oratorical skills are developed through a multitude of activities, such as classroom discussions and debates on current affairs or selected literature, analysis of the power of the language in classical poetry and modern music, and school-wide events which stimulate the girls’ interests in their Mother Tongue.

Beyond the confines of the classroom, girls experience the richness and understand the nuances of their Mother Tongue through visits to educational institutions, museums and the theatre, as well as their participation in various enrichment programmes. Through the Mother Tongue Programme, we want to promote girls’ cultural literacy and skillfulness in language, and hence prepare them for the world stage.

  Humanities

Philosophy

SCGS values the Humanities as a discipline that exposes one to the world and society – the issues explored promote the students’ sensitivities to their environment, and enable them to understand the physical and human environment in the 21st century. Through our Humanities Programme, we aim to inculcate in the girls a sense of belonging to the community and country. Our approach to teaching endeavours to provide the girls with valuable skills in interpreting the world around them, and to develop in them an appreciation for the local and global human experience.

We want our girls to be able to understand and learn from social issues, challenges and constraints facing Singapore and the rest of the world today. Through the study of the Humanities at SCGS, girls are well-equipped to make informed judgments that reflect objectivity, adaptability and concern for their physical and human environment.

Programme

SCGS girls will first gain an introduction to History and Geography at the Lower secondary Level, and then have the option of pursuing either discipline as a Full or Elective subject at the Upper secondary level, alongside their study of English Literature and Social Studies.

Our teaching is focused on engaging the girls through a variety of interactive classroom activities and the creative employment of various media to bring the diverse topics of study to life. Beyond the core curriculum, we believe in providing the girls with a greater understanding of the Humanities through enrichment programmes and overseas field trips.

Girls will acquire knowledge of historical events, human and physical Geography, and the economic activities of our nation and the wider world. In addition, they will be challenged to integrate the knowledge and skills taught in the various disciplines.  For example, they may embark on physical, social and cultural research studies with the Field Studies Council in the UK, or take on a Humanities–Language Arts interdisciplinary project.

  Mathematics

Philosophy

Mathematics, the language of nature, is a versatile tool that transcends different aspects of everyday life. Present in the environment around us, and employed in the study of various subjects such as economics, science and engineering, the learning of Mathematics involves an understanding of logical thinking and general problem solving strategies. It involves observing and investigating patterns and relationships in social and physical phenomena.

Programme

SCGS values Mathematics as not only an essential academic subject, but also an important vehicle through which the mind can be stretched, and creative reasoning skills honed.  Through the SCGS Mathematics programme, girls will develop habits of thinking in this discipline, as well as an appreciation for its beauty and depth.

Our teachers endeavour to introduce mathematical concepts in a creative manner. The programme empowers girls with problem-solving skills, and stimulates their interest and passion for the subject through applications in real-life situations. Girls will also develop an understanding of the history and logic behind the theorems.

Girls who demonstrate exceptional mathematical ability and a strong interest in Mathematics will be given the opportunity to further develop their potential through Mathematics Olympiads, and programmes under the school’s accelerated curriculum. The SC Young Scholars’ Academy (SCYS Academy) provides lessons beyond the examinable syllabus, pitched at a high level to cater to the girls’ capacity to study concepts in greater depth, breadth and complexity. The advanced curriculum will also introduce additional aspects of the subject to these high-performing individuals, thus preparing them for future academic pursuits.

 Science

Philosophy

The study of science in SCGS is viewed as an important process whereby girls not only acquire scientific knowledge, methods and skills, but also develop a spirit of inquiry and sensitivity to the power of science and technology in the 21st century. Our programme endeavours to promote awareness of the social, environmental and ethical implications of science and technology in today’s world, and to hone the girls’ skills in analysis and critical thinking in the application of scientific knowledge.

Programme

We aim to provide girls with a strong foundation in science, and to cultivate their curiosity and passion for understanding science in the context of the world around them. This is first achieved in the Lower secondary years, when girls will be introduced to Biology, Chemistry and Physics through a modular system. At the Upper Secondary level, girls are streamed into a range of pure Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) subject combinations according to their interests and abilities.

Practical sessions span all four years of study and are conducted in tandem with theory lessons. Such an approach allows girls to better understand the theoretical knowledge they have assimilated, and to develop their experimental and investigative techniques.

We also offer a Life Science Programme, aimed at equipping students with the knowledge, techniques and developments in this field. Activities in this programme are aimed at stimulating the girls’ interests and promoting their understanding in this dynamic field of study. We believe in providing all girls with a first-hand experience in the Life-Science Laboratory, where girls will have the opportunity to understand the relationship between scientific knowledge and situations in real life.

In line with the SCGS Talent Programme, we offer an accelerated science curriculum for high-performing girls with strong aptitude for science. These lessons are pitched at a high level to tap on students’ abilities to study ideas and concepts in greater depth, breadth and complexity. Pupils with a passion for Science and the development of new scientific knowledge may embark on research projects under the Science Mentorship Programme.  Through advanced academic studies, we provide courses beyond the core syllabus, such as in Electronics, Mechanics, Molecular Genetics, Spectroscopy & Chromatography. These will prepare the girls for greater achievement in science at the post-secondary level.

  Physical Education

Philosophy

SCGS believes in helping girls develop life-long healthy habits. We value Physical Education as an integral aspect of a well-rounded education. Our programme aims to impart knowledge on health and fitness, and to develop mental acuity through a better appreciation and understanding of games. Physical Education is also used as a means of developing teamwork amongst the girls.

Programme

With a broad-based curriculum that caters to students of different abilities and interests, we advocate a holistic and inter-disciplinary approach to learning. We aim to promote the idea that knowledge is not compartmentalized, but is inter-related. This is achieved through school-based lessons which educate the girls on healthy living and sports, as well as enrichment activities that expose the girls to a plethora of different ways to enjoy healthy living.

Cultivating a strong sense of camaraderie has always been a key aspect of Physical Education in SCGS. Inter-class sports, games and friendly competitions serve to foster strong bonds between the girls. Through Physical Education at SCGS, girls are not only developed physically, but also learn more about leading and supporting the people around them.

  Art & Design

Philosophy

SCGS believes in cultivating an appreciation for aesthetics through our Art and Design Programme. Our teaching takes on a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, as we believe that the subject is an integral aspect of a well-rounded, quality education.

Programme

We aim to promote creativity and sensory perception and imagination through our broad-based art education which is tailored to girls of different abilities and interests. We want to educate them to appreciate and understand artworks from a variety of cultures and contexts, and to develop communication skills by thinking about, planning for and creating artworks. This is achieved by introducing to students the history of art, as well as the different mediums with which they can create art. Ceramics, paper-cutting, linoleum carving and acrylic painting are just some of the modules that feature in our programme. There are also opportunities for girls to explore and understand works of art outside the confines of school.

All students are introduced to Art and Design at the Lower secondary. Students who are especially passionate about the subject and wish to study it at a deeper level may continue to pursue Art as a subject in the GCE ‘O’ Level examinations.

  Music

 Philosophy

The SCGS Music Programme seeks to nurture a lifelong appreciation of the Arts. We value music as an integral aspect of a holistic education, and endeavour to create in our girls an enthusiasm for the aesthetics.

Programme

Our teaching is designed to introduce girls to a wide range of musical styles using instruments and various forms of media. We believe in harnessing the girls’ creativity in artistic and musical expression. This is achieved through class and school-wide activities which expose students to creative aspects of stage production, such as song writing, set and costume design.

Girls are also taught to appreciate digital music – they are given the opportunity to synthesize their own pieces of music using software. We believe that music is not an aesthetic subject on its own, but a dynamic discipline that can be fused with language and visual art. Hence, girls may embark on interdisciplinary activities, such as creating music to complement their visual art pieces, or a literary analysis of song lyrics and the role of music in conveying emotions.

All SCGS girls study Music at the lower secondary. Girls who are passionate about music and wish to pursue the subject at a more advanced level may continue to study music at the upper secondary as a GCE ‘O’ Level subject.

  Home Economics

Philosophy

The SCGS Home Economics Programme aims to develop students' knowledge and attitudes in Home Economics for the well-being of self, family and the community. We believe that such life-skills are an important aspect of a holistic education.

Programme

Home Economics is taught at the lower secondary. Both the theoretical and practical aspects of Home Economics feature in our programme. Girls are taught the basic principles of nutrition and food management for healthy living, as well as how to make informed choices as a consumer. Our teachers also educate the girls on textile and clothing design and maintenance for daily living.
The girls are given opportunities to try their hand at culinary art, and express their creativity through craftwork.
