Philosophy
SCGS believes in a holistic approach in the teaching of English Language and Literature. English Language competency is essential for communicating in the real world - it provides opportunities for personal development and promotes confidence in social interaction. Literature stimulates one’s sensitivity to how language can persuade and arouse emotions. Through Literature, girls will learn to appreciate the human condition and in the process, understand life in all its multifaceted dimensions. We also develop their appreciation for language, drama and the arts through our teaching of Literature. We aim to empower girls to think, write and speak confidently, and hence prepare them for meaningful roles in society.
Programme
The SCGS English programme places great emphasis on developing oratory, aural and drama skills. Our Speech and Drama lessons build the girls’ confidence in speaking and articulating their ideas. Through classroom activities such as choral recitation, Show and Ask, and the Readers’ Theatre, girls will learn to be eloquent speakers of the English Language.
Our teaching style also hones critical thinking, reading, comprehension and creative writing skills. We believe in providing the girls with a global perspective through their study of the English Language. The study of current affairs is integrated into the curriculum – girls will analyse news articles, reflect on the world around them, and learn to express their thoughts through journal-writing, short film making and blogging.
The Enhanced Literature Programme prepares students for our Language Arts Programme at Secondary 1. This programme seamlessly integrates social and cultural themes, Philosophy and literary elements. For example, at Primary 4, the girls will study a selection of classics such as Heidi and Secret Garden, and explore the theme of oppression with reference to the works of Martin Luther King Jr. They will also explore the plot, character, language and setting of the novels. Literary devices such as metaphors, alliteration, tone, symbolism and irony are studied through poetry and creative writing.
Our programme also features a multitude of enrichment modules designed to further enhance their study of English beyond the confines of the classroom. Girls may, for example, try their hand at news broadcasting and interview techniques through the Broadcasting and Journalism module. The Arts Creative Empowerment module uses a combination of workshops involving research, writing, oral presentations and drama-driven activities to enable pupils to create a performance, display or publication. Some will also be trained to think on the spot and speak off-the-cuff through games and role play during the Spontaneous Speaking Workshop.

Philosophy
With the rise of China as a new economic powerhouse, a good command of the Chinese Language and an understanding of Chinese traditions is an essential asset in today’s society. The SCGS Chinese Language Programme is aimed at equipping girls with competency in using the language as a communication tool, as well as developing in them an appreciation for the richness of Chinese culture and history. We want to help girls gain awareness of their cultural identity, find their roots and master the art of communicating in Chinese.
Programme
Our teaching is focused on developing reading, writing and oratory skills through a variety of activities, such as creative writing and Speech and Drama Lessons. It is also our aim to help girls cultivate the habit of reading Chinese books. They are exposed to various kinds of literature at different levels, such as picture books and bridging books at the lower primary, and short stories at the upper primary.
Our Programme places emphasis on reading and character recognition. At Primary 1 and 2, our teachers expose pupils to vocabulary in the Primary 1 to 4 curricula. This is to develop word recognition skills, and to facilitate the girls’ advanced reading. The girls will also undertake supplementary reading and weekly assessments after each unit to reinforce their abilities to recognise the words taught.
We believe in making the Chinese Language come to life outside the textbooks. Our department has developed the Chinese Language Appreciation Programme (CLAP). CLAP familiarizes the pupils with the Chinese language and culture through interactive activities such as Chinese opera, tongue twisters, idioms, Chinese IQ questions, songs, classical poetry, folk tales and comic appreciation. Activities during the Chinese New Year celebrations also serve to further enhance the girls’ appreciation for Chinese culture. Selected students will also have the opportunity to participate in an overseas cultural research project such as the Overseas Immersion Programme in Suzhou and Taiwan for Primary 5 students.

|
Philosophy
The Malay Language abounds with cultural and literary riches that provide insights to an integral aspect of our multicultural society. The SCGS Malay Language Programme seeks to equip girls with skills to communicate effectively with the Malay Language, and to develop in them an appreciation for Malay heritage. We believe that our role is to impart knowledge of the customs, practices and positive values advocated in the Malay culture through the use of language.
Programme
Our programme emphasizes the use of Malay literature and folktales in teaching. It is our aim to help students cultivate the lifelong habit of reading Malay books. Each year, girls study a selection of books and poetry on which class assignments are based.
Lessons in the lower primary concentrate on building a strong foundation in listening, reading and speaking Malay. Girls participate in the choral reading of folk songs (Lagu-lagu Pusaka) as a class, and also enact literary or traditional Malay Opera (Bangsawan) characters in the Readers’ Theatre, thus developing their fluency in reading and building their confidence in public speaking. To expand their vocabulary, they will also recite and analyse tongue twisters and rhymes (pantun).
In the upper primary, writing and oratory skills are further developed. The composition and delivery of duologues based on characters in their literature texts, or a newscaster’s script to report an incident in the text are some of the interactive and enjoyable creative writing assignments that girls will undertake. As part of the school’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) Programme, the digital media is also employed to enhance the curriculum, such as in the use of software to record interviews that they have scripted, or to create a jingle and poster to advertise products featured in the text.
