The SCGS girl is noted for her inner grace and beauty. While this has been attributed to our school culture, heritage and policy on all girls reading Literature, it is also said that our Living and Lifestyle programme has had a role to play. The Living and Lifestyle Programme captures the delivery of soft yet essential lifeskills. Pupils reinforce the development of collaborative skills, flexible thinking, and an appreciation for diversity and the arts and are anchored on strong social-cultural skills with desirable personality traits and soft skills such as social graces, communication, propriety and optimism that prepare them to be world ready leaders. All Lower Primary and Lower Secondary pupils attend Gymnastics and Dance modules. They are also exposed to the fundamentals of good musicianship and drama which culminates to a performance task of writing and presenting a musical. The school partners established local and overseas institutions in the delivery of some of these modules. Pupils’ knowledge and competencies in the different domains are affirmed through certification by recognised boards and institutions. Pupils discover and learn personal mastery through studies on emotional and social intelligence, and acquire a deeper understanding of different cultures through a wide array of modules including Arts Education, Personal Grooming, Fine Dining & Etiquette, Emotional and Social Intelligence and Healthy Living. We develop in-depth appreciation of Culinary Art and the Peranakan heritage of the school. Part of this is a Secondary One field trip to Malacca to study the Peranakan culture which includes learning more about the Peranakan dressing and how to prepare common Peranakan delicacies. Our extensive Enhanced Enrichment Programme puts emphasis on holistic learning. Through Literature and the Performing Arts such as Dance, which has become synonymous with SCGS, we develop creative, confident and articulate pupils, with a keen understanding of the world now and in the future. In the Performing Arts, the school has moved from our PSE (Dance) sharing among local schools, to benchmarking of standards at international competitions. In a display of technical brilliance and graceful artistry, the SCGS Dance Group once again won the hearts and admiration of the audience at this year’s Barcelona International Dance Competition coming in top in Costume Design, Classical Ballet and the Dance Grand Prix Europe for the Overall Best Performing Group in the whole competition. The Choir which won the Gold award at the International Chorale Competition in Italy in 2008 will also be benchmarking themselves at the International Choral Competition in Portugal in July this year. In the 2010 International Chorale Competition in Portugal, the choir has been awarded gold and first in the folk category. Our Choir Mistress received the Best Conductor Award. The Annual SCGS Arts Festival is organised to enrich the appreciation of the arts and to celebrate Asia’s rich cultural diversity. With our ever expanding programmes, more facilities are in the pipeline, including an Integrated Performing Arts Centre and Indoor Sports Hall with state-of-the-art features.
