Our Philosophy |
The Singapore Chinese Girls' School was established upon a bedrock of high standards and the aspiration and will to
create equal educational opportunities for girls as a means of developing their character and abilities,
academically and in lifeskills. In accordance with this philosophy,
the school has built up a tradition of excellence and produced pupils who are active and constructive members of society.
Pure Gold, Fine Jade
Jinyu, Distinctively SCGS
The School colours are gold and jade, these arising from a Chinese metaphor "JinYu" which refers to young ladies who were the treasures of their
family because they embodied the virtues of filial piety, gentility, kindness, propriety and diligence.
Like gold that is refined for purity, SCGS builds the character and integrity of each girl, refining and testing her. In contrast, and unlike gold
which can be melted down and re-formed, jade is solid and has to be carved. It also has its inherent qualities, like each individual’s personality that
the craftsman has to work around. He shapes it with love and artistry according to its colour and shading. SCGS sees its role as an educator in the same way.
Each child will be different, and the treasure uncovered will be distinctive like individual pieces of jade carvings. Strength and beauty come together in gold
and jade, in our distinctively SCGS way.
