I stared at the screen, shocked. The pictures and videos they had shown me was like nothing I had seen before.Gruesome pictures of children so skinny that their heads were too large for their body and children barely the age of 7 holding guns ready to shoot their own country men.The OLE symposium has helped me treasure the important things in life.Food, clean water to drink, clothes, family, love and protection. This symposium also urged me more to help these people.I have really liked this symposium and hope there can be more of such activities in the future.

I think that this symposium has helped me learn more about what is going on around the world and the people who are suffering in all the different countries. It has taught me to appreciate the fact that I have a family who care for me, and an endless supply of food and water everyday.
Although here in Singapore, we all think going to school and exams are really sucky and we don’t want to do it. But there are thousands of people in the world who don’t even get the opportunity to receive an education, so we should be thankful we get to go to school.
When I first signed up for this symposium, it was just a way for me to do something with my best friends every Saturday. But I found that could learn many things through this, not just about people suffering. On the last session, each one of signed up for something different: music, art, speech, writing... I signed up for speech, with my friends of course, and we learned about body language and how to better relay our thought through a speech.
I’m not sure whether I would sign up for this again but the secondary girls who taught us were very funny and nice so maybe when I go SC sec, and they have this again, I’ll sign up to be a facilitator instead.

After the 4 OLE symposium sessions, I have learnt a lot about the happenings in Third World countries. During the symposium, I have been taught a lot about the lack of healthcare, welfare, child soldiers, child labor and UNICEF.
Child labor and child soldiers can be aged from just the tender age of 7. People use children to be soldiers or slaves, because they are gullible and easy to convince. I think that these children do not deserve this, because they too are children, and are no different from us. They can’t choose where their birthplace is. They should not be deprived of a proper childhood.
Lack of healthcare is also another big problem in countries such as Africa, where medicine, provisions are scarce. UNICEF is one of the biggest organizations that bother to lend a helping hand to those in need.
From this symposium, I have made many friends, and have also become much more aware about the cruel activities that are going on in the third world countries and about UNICEF, and many other things. I think that this symposium is a very good idea that can reach out to people, and is able to educate people. There are many ways to help those people. Examples like donating, spreading the word etc.
Even though we are unable to go directly to lend a helping hand, we can render help from here. Remember, every little thing can help to improve the lives of those having hardships. If there was another symposium, I would attend.
